Dogs Against Smoking
Did you know- that half of all dogs over 10 years old die of cancer?
Cassie the Dalmatian

Hi I am Cassie. As you probably already figured out, I am a DALMATIAN!
I love being a Dalmatian. Everywhere I go people point at me and get excited and come over and pet me. I love it when people tell me I am beautiful i am and make jokes like "Where are the other 100 Dalmations?"
Now Dalmatians seem to have a reputation of being unfriendly, but I am very friendly. I really wouldn't hurt anyone. Yes I do chase the birds and the squirrels and the bunnies, but I slow down when I get too close. I just want to play.
One thing I do hate is smoking! You see I have a very sensitive nose,
and the stuff really stinks. Humans do a lot of very strange things, but smoking seems awfully dumb. My human dad works for the National Cancer Institute and he says smoking kills lots of humans and even children and it is bad for us pets as well.
So I think dogs should bark whenever anyone smokes and tear up any cigarettes they can find.
If you dogs out there want to join up on this page email some information and a picture to me at cassie@artsciencepub.com
Wags and licks,
Cassie

Beauty the Afgan Hound
My name is Beauty. I am an Afghan Hound. I was born on July 20, 2003. I grew up on a farm in the smokefree state of Vermont. At 3 months of age I moved to Evansville, Indiana. I don't live in a smokefree state now, but I do live in a smokefree home. I am very grateful for that because of the long snout I have. Breathing cigarette smoke makes me howl. My mom works in tobacco control and she says 9,700 Hoosiers die every year from tobacco. I feel bad for all the pets in our state who are affected every year. I hope I can get the message across to pet owners to not smoke around their pets and other familiy members! I am going to visit my local vets to take them information on the effects of secondhand smoke on pets. I hope you will do the same.

Jordan the Beagle
Hi I am Jordan and I am a beagle! A tricolor beagle to be exact. I am a very lucky guy because I was rescued by Beagle Rescue of Maryland. I don't remember much of my puppyhood, but it was not good. At age 2 I ended up in an animal shelter, and when no one would take me home, Beagle Rescue took me. I lived in a foster home in Virginia for awhile with lots of other dogs, until Laura took me to my new Forever Home.

Now I am very happy! I get lots of food, and many couches and beds to sleep on, and I go for a walk in the woods almost every day. My new sister Cassie is a great playmate. Sometimes I still act bad and growl at my family, but I don't mean to be bad.
I also think smoking is stupid and think people should stop. Luckily no one smokes in my house. But it makes me sad to think of all of the other dogs that have to smell that stuff every day. Dogs get cancer too, you know!

Smell ya later,
Jordan
Veterinary Schools and Pet Cancer Treatment Programs
Many US veterinary schools have oncology programs and several have cancer centers with very sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic tools available to them. consult your veterinarian, or contact the schools directly.
An exciting new area is comparative oncology. Here the tools for human cancer therapy are applied to animals and new therapies can be tested in pets and the results used to aid in developing human treatments.
